Westminster Abbey
An architectural masterpiece of the 13th to 16th centuries,
Westminster Abbey presents a unique pageant of British history
- the tombs of kings and queens, countless memorials to the
famous and the great, and the setting for every Coronation since
1066. On to the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace;
Big Ben, with its world-famous chimes ringing out the hours, as
well as the breathtaking Gothic wonder that is the Houses of
Parliament; Trafalgar Square, watched over by Lord Nelson from the
top of the 202 ft. Nelson's Column; and the West End theatre and
entertainment centre. The tour ends at around 12:30 p.m. in Trafalgar
Square. When the Abbey is closed, visit St Paul's or the Chapter
House. When a Changing of the Guard is not scheduled, visit
Horseguards Parade, built on the site of the jousting yard of the old
Whitehall Palace and the scene of reviews, parades and ceremonies.
