In Search of King Arthur

Glastonbury Tor
Return to a more relaxed age of English tradition and culture and a land of Celtic legend and the romantic King Arthur. Explore the counties of great prehistoric ruins such as Stonehenge, of England's great maritime history, picturesque fishing villages, rugged clifftop coasts and elegant seaside resorts. See Somerset's orchards, Devon's patchwork countryside and awesome moorlands.

Itinerary:

Day 1 (Sat) London - Devon/Somerset
Drive through Wiltshire, England's oldest county, over the Salisbury Plain to visit the great prehistoric temple of Stonehenge and other ancient burial sites. See the ruins of Iron Age hill forts, where the great Celtic King Arthur and his Knights maybe took on Saxon invaders. In Winchester, see the great Round Table in the mediaeval hall. Explore Cadbury Castle (possibly the site of Camelot) and some lovely surrounding thatched-cottage villages.

Day 2 (Sun) Devon/Somerset Borders
Today, explore Dorsetshire, where time seems to have stood still amid the villages and harbours of the region. See Jane Austen's Lyme Regis and Thomas Hardy's cottage. Visit the famed Chesil Beach, the quaint town of Dorchester and shop in the lace and antique town of Honiton. If time, visit Lawrence of Arabia's home, a carved giant and England's smallest pub!

Day 3 (Mon) Devon/Somerset Borders
Travel through awesome Dartmoor National Park to the north Cornwall coast. Visit Tintagel Castle, reputed birthplace of King Arthur, atop wild cliffs accessible only by walking. Also visit quaint fishing villages on the north Cornwall and Devon coasts. Our day wouldn't be complete without stopping for a famed Cornish pastie, perhaps at a thatched-roofed pub.

Day 4 (Tue) Devon/Somerset - London
Today, visit Cheddar Gorge and the mystic town of Glastonbury, site of Arthur's burial. See the ancient abbey and the mysterious 'Tor'. Visit Wells and its famed 12th-century Norman cathedral. Explore the elegant Georgian city of Bath and its Roman remains, before returning to London, partially via the old coach road.
